Apprentice

"After leaving school I had a few part-time positions but full time vacancies were scarce and I was really worried that I would not be able to get a decent job.

One of my neighbours worked at Willbond and he suggested that I dropped my CV in because they had just promoted a trainee and he thought there could be an opening.

What a stroke of luck – I got an interview with one of the Directors and he offered me an Apprenticeship. This involves me working towards an NVQ via on the job training and a formal course run for Willbond by the Builders Merchants Federation.

I spent 5 months working in the warehouse at Head Office and then I was asked if I would like to work in West Bridgford at one of the satellite branches where you learn fast because in a small branch you have to be a jack of all trades dealing with goods inwards, deliveries and customers.

The number of products we sell is vast and at first I thought I would not be able to cope but my knowledge is growing day by day and so is my confidence.

There are so many people at Willbond who started where I have and who have gone on to really good jobs so I know that if I stick at it I can do well too."
